32-year-old Sharon Rutherford is charged with solicitation of murder and two counts of enticing a child for immoral purposes. Rutherford, a teacher at Coffeeville High School, was arrested in April of last year. The investigation began in 2004 when someone sent an unsigned letter to the school accusing Rutherford of sleeping with students. The school investigated and informed police.
But they had little to go on until April 5, 2006 when one of the students told Principal Janice Richardson that he had slept with Rutherford. She was arrested less than two weeks later and has since been put on house arrest.
The school placed Rutherford on administrative leave until the case is completed and the State Board of Education revoked her teaching certificate.
Rutherford's husband also filed for divorce. James Rutherford now lives in East Alabama with their two daughters.
The case has taken the national spotlight so the judge in the case has issued a gag order for everyone involved in the trial.
