Deputies say Lyndal Wilkins called his ex-girlfriend's home and said he wanted to meet her new boyfriend so he could return some of her things. Once the boyfriend left, Wilkins smashed through the back door. He was carrying a sawed-off shotgun.
Wilkin's ex-girlfriend was able to hide inside a box and send a text message to her boyfriend that read "911 Help Help."
When deputies arrived, they say Wilkins told them he was armed and not to come inside. A SWAT Team and hostage negotiators were called to the scene and three nearby schools were put on lockdown.
Wilkin's ex-girlfriend managed to escape unharmed. After a three hour standoff, Wilkins surrendered.
During a search of the house, deputies say they found a sawed-off shotgun, ammunition and a bag containing handcuffs, rope, knives, gasoline, lighter fluid, and matches. Deputies also found a hand written letter indicating Wilkins went to the house to kill his ex-girlfriend and then himself.
Wilkins faces numerous charges including armed burglary and attempted kidnapping. He's being held in the Santa Rosa County Jail with no bond.
