A national investigation into illegally sold steroids, paid off doctors and pumped up athletes has landed in Downtown Mobile.Dr. Scott Corliss admitted that he was involved in the illegal steroid business.
News 5's Tiffany Craig asked, "Why did you decide to plead guilty." Corliss mumbled back, "No Comment."
Corliss might not be saying much but federal prosecutors are starting to open up about the elaborate scheme. It involves doctors, sales representatives, athletes and a Mobile business called Applied Pharmacy Services.
Greg Bordenkircher is the First Assistant U.S. Attorney in Mobile. "Its part of a long term, thorough investigation on the sale of anabolic steroids and human growth hormones from Mobile and it's shipped all across the nation."
The players in this steroid scheme are scattered all over the country too. Corliss worked in Colorado.
According to court documents, a sales representative for the pharmacy would actually do the paperwork and even give the recommended dosage for a customer. He would fax the information to the doctor for the necessary signature.
Court documents also revealed that customers would pay around 400 dollars for the drugs. The doctors involved would receive 100 dollars for each prescription.
What we didn't learn from this case are the names of the athletes on the receiving end.
Bordenkircher says they want to focus on the core of the problem not the big names that will make news "I don't want to go into the names of those people or who the athletes were because that's not what the investigation's about. It's not to grab a headline or grabbing an athlete. It's to get the core of the problem which is the pharmacy and the doctors and the businesses that are selling all across the country when they knew and should have known they couldn't do it."
Dr. Corliss pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of withholding information about the way the operation works. He could face up to 3 years in prison and a 250-thousand dollar fine when sentenced in May.
