While the Dauphin Island Bridge tragedy has touched the lives of many along the Gulf Coast some are hoping to memorialize the tragedy by petitioning to rename the bridge.
Several people have left stuffed animals and a cross in memory of the four children who authorities say were tossed off the bridge by their father. Many viewers have reached out in light of the tragedy on our web forum right here on this site. Michelle Sieck says that's where she came across the idea to rename Dauphin Island Bridge to Four Angels Bridge, in memorial of Hannah, Lindsey, Ryan and Danny. "I had seen where several people had posted the possibility of renaming Dauphin Island Bridge to the Four Angels bridge in memory of the children, but didn't know how to go about doing it," Said Sieck.
That's when Sieck says she decided to help out by organizing an online petition through the website I-Petition. She says by renaming the bridge it will help to remember the children. Alabama State Representative Spencer Collier supports the petition he says he plans to present legislators with a house joint resolution. "I think it's a great idea and I'm going to move forward with it. I've communicated with the Senator to let me say that I'm going to move forward with it, if the family is Ok with it, "Said Spencer.
Collier says if the family gives them permission to rename Dauphin Island Bridge in memorial of the four children, they will introduce the resolution February 5th when legislature goes in session.

Who gives a crap if we have to explain what happened? These precious children need to be remembered. Although this was a horrible tragedy, it can and will never be forgotten! Everyone should be aware of what happened. The name of the bridge will not be changed for any reason but to honor these children. I think it should be done! And every time I go over that bridge I will remember and say a little prayer. Come on people, this isn’t about you...don’t be selfish!

Although this is a horrific crime and it’s so unfortunate that it’s happened we should not rename the bridge.  When given directions to visitors to our state to Dauphin Island, they will ask how the bridge got it’s name.  Then we’ll have to explain that this is the way our children are murdered by crack heads.  Ohhh that should make them feel really safe and comfortable while visiting Mobile County.  Let’s remember the children in our hearts.  Why do we always have to be reminded of these terrible occurrences.

Whatever the mother wants is fine with me-that should be our first concern. She may not want anything. People grieve differently. It is great that there are so many that want to memorialize and honor the children. But no one idea should be rejected just because of differences of personal opinion. Like I said, the mom should have the last word. And I agree ghamilton, the arguing and bickering is getting ridiculous. We need to respect everyone’s suggestions and let the mom have the final word (when the time is right). And please remember, that those who are trying to help, are doing this FOR THE CHILDREN.

I also concur that the Dauphin Island Bridge remain the Dauphin Island Bridge.  It might be a better idea to rename the Bayou La Batre drawbridge as a memorial since that is where the real impact on community, friends and family is happening.

I do not believe that Dauphin Island bridge should be renamed.  Everytime i pass over that bridge I will think of those children.  Renaming the bridge will not bring them back.  A nice plaque on the bridge will be perfect.

Hi Viewers

I am one of the people who built a myspace website for the children and I know that we may run into some red tape renaming the bridge...so I have idea if that fails.

I suggest people try to raise money to build a Childrens Memorial Park so that other children and families can benefit from it all while keeping their memory alive. Perhaps it can be built on donated land or land that the town of Dauphin Island owns already and has not put to use?  It would be silent closure on the anniversary of this tragedy if we can all come together to hold a candlelight vigil at a beautiful park dedicated in these children name.

Sometimes when we comment we don’t often ask what would the
mother like? She is the one who has to deal with this horrible reminder.  Maybe she would like a quiet place to go somewhere near her home to pay her respects and to pray.  I know we have all been touched, but to argue about a bridge, that brought such tears and fear to our community is needless.  We need to respect the family and the mothers wishes.

I would think a childs spirit would be happier in a memorial park where other children are playing and being happy.  Not being stuck on a bridge (crime scene).

Thank you to the many supporters of renaming the bridge Four Angels Bridge. I cannot understand why anyone would be OPPOSED to memorializing and honoring these children. Is it an “island” mentality, that they think they own the bridge and DI? Do they think that they are so much better than everyone else? How does it “glorify” the murderer-no one has said name it after him. In fact, we will forget his name over time. Does anyone remember the name of the person from VA Tech or the 9/11 hijackers. I don’t, just the people who died. Did it honor the bomber when the street corner and church in Birmingham were renamed for the four little girls that lost their lives there. No, it honored them. Of course all this controversy is moot, until we know what the mother wants. Perhaps she doesn’t want this tribute and it would be too painful for her. I personally don’t see the idea of a park as some have suggested. As a mother myself, if I saw other kids playing in the park, that would hurt so much t

I think the bridge name should stay the way it is. Do we really want monsters to think about where they commit their crimes hoping for that place to be named after the event?
