While the Dauphin Island Bridge tragedy has touched the lives of many along the Gulf Coast some are hoping to memorialize the tragedy by petitioning to rename the bridge.
Several people have left stuffed animals and a cross in memory of the four children who authorities say were tossed off the bridge by their father. Many viewers have reached out in light of the tragedy on our web forum right here on this site. Michelle Sieck says that's where she came across the idea to rename Dauphin Island Bridge to Four Angels Bridge, in memorial of Hannah, Lindsey, Ryan and Danny. "I had seen where several people had posted the possibility of renaming Dauphin Island Bridge to the Four Angels bridge in memory of the children, but didn't know how to go about doing it," Said Sieck.
That's when Sieck says she decided to help out by organizing an online petition through the website I-Petition. She says by renaming the bridge it will help to remember the children. Alabama State Representative Spencer Collier supports the petition he says he plans to present legislators with a house joint resolution. "I think it's a great idea and I'm going to move forward with it. I've communicated with the Senator to let me say that I'm going to move forward with it, if the family is Ok with it, "Said Spencer.
Collier says if the family gives them permission to rename Dauphin Island Bridge in memorial of the four children, they will introduce the resolution February 5th when legislature goes in session.

I will abbreviate what I posted on the forum-but basically anything will be painful as a memorial. That is all these children will be is a memory. I support the renaming with a simple sign, but I am also not against(totally) any of the other ideas-the park, fountain, whatever. I think there is room for multiple memorials, but the final word on what if any is the mom’s. As to making a donation to St. Judes-they are a wonderful hopital and do help kids-but since this was a community tragedy, perhaps USA Children’s and Women’s Hospital would be a good idea. They, after all, do serve the children of our community. As to expense-how much does a sign cost? What about a park, fencing, fountain, etc. I don’t think this is an either/or issue. Hopefully we will be able to do multiple tributes and memorials.

I fail to see the comparison between what happened at Pearl Harbor and the many battlefields around the U.S. to what happened on the Dauphin Island Bridge. The men and women of Pearl Harbor and the historic battlefields were fighting for somthing they believed in. Getting angry at your wife and throwing your children off a bridge to spite her isn’t an act of courage. Any gutless wonder can do that. To agree or disagree that the name of the bridge be changed is a personal opinion and I respect the rights of each and every one of us to have that opinion. Throwing a tantrum because someone dosen’t agree with my opinion just isn’t my style. When it comes right down to it, how many people, other than the ones who actually live on the Island, cross that bridge with any frequency ? If you want to honor their memory, set up a fund in their name at St.Judes Hospital. They’re in the business of saving kids lives there. That would have more of an impact than changing a name on a bridge.

Thats the point! Everytime you pass over that bridge you should remember those babies!!! You will remember the tragedy...but you will also remember how precious a human life is!!! Why is this so hard to swallow!!!??? Yes, its a horrible targedy but it needs to be remembered!!! These children has their lives stolen from them, this bridge is to remind you how precious life is and how precious a child is. This is in honor...nothing else!!! The Dauphin Island Bridge is the exact place where Hannah, Ryan, Danny and Lindsey lost their lives...don’t forget that!!! Its not different than any other memorial. think about it...Hawaii and Pearl Harbor...many battle sites in the United States...we make these site important because of who died there and what impact they had on society!!! I hurt for these children and their mama, but I still believe that the bridge should be there for the memory!!!!!!

As someone who has spent many years with the fire dept., police dept. and EMS, “naive” is not a word that’s in my vocabulary. I can and do believe that people are capable of doing anything. I’ve seen and cleaned up the results. I can and do believe that drug , alcohol abuse and domestic violence are a serious problem in this country and that the children are the ones who suffer at the hands of this abuse. I can and do believe that protecting our children is our first priority and if removing them from the homes of these abusers is the only way to protect them, then so be it. I don’t ever want to have to “honor” the memory of my children or anyone elses. I want to do whatever I have to do to keep them safe from harm now. Not when it’s too late. Arguing over the re-naming of a bridge won’t keep them safe, but passing more stringent laws might. A bridge is a bridge. Memories and honor are held close to your heart, not on a piece of metal.

I think the money, time, and effort it would take to rename this bridge would be better served by avoiding a similar event in the future. I think the community should be more concerned with erecting safety rails (fencing) along the entire bridge. Had those been in place already, this tragedy may have been avoided.

built a nice memorial park will be a great idea for remember the children because when tourist come there they will know why this park is built for. And each year when come to their anniversary people could come together around the park and light candles or bring flowers for the 4 angels. Each time when someone visit the park they will say a prayer for each angels and they will never forget how it happen to this 4 little angels..........I think d.i.bridge should not be change because people want to feel & exciting when the hear d.i. bridge. A place where everyone can enjoy. A memorial park could be a place where they can visit the children in their memory. Their mother could walk through the park if she need spend time alone. No one could stop in the middle of the side bridge if they want to bring flowers or stuff animal for the kid because it not safe. Right? A park where people can spend time with their family or have a picnic there. I think it be a GOOD idea to built a park.

I think the bridge should be renamed,I think it should be renamed Angels In The Sky bridge, and this is why,it would be a beautiful way to say how alot of people feel about this tragedy,The mother shes never going to forget,if I were her I would look at it as an honor, and for all the people who helped bring her children home people who have been touched by this tragedy people who cared to go out and look for them everday,no none of these people are ever going to forget, and as a reminder to all the people out there on drugs,Iwould think you would want to forget, forget that drugs played a part in this,do you know where your kids are,are you on drugs are they on drugs, thats why this does not need to be forgotten, theres a lesson for all of us and our kids, bad things can happend when you do drugs,no this does not need to be swept under the bridge, people need to learn from this tragedy

I think you might be missing the point of everything…

This is just my thinking, but, the babies are children of the bayou. And in Bayou la Batre there is a pretty waterside park at the bridge and I think that a memorial should be placed there instead of renaming the Dauphin Island bridge. After all, as they have been found they have been brought home to the bayou.

Nobody’s going to take our comments into consideration anyways. If they do they do and if they don’t they don’t. Either way, my heart and prayers go out to the family and it’s nice to know so many people out there care about the precious little ones.
