Hundreds of Smurfit-Stone employees lined up early Wednesday morning hoping to get a shot at keeping their jobs. Last week, Georgia-Pacific announced it was buying Smurfit-Stone. Now, every employee at the plant in Brewton must reapply.
They came early and stood in line long hours in the one hundred degree temperatures, most of them hoping to keep the job they’ve held for 24, 41 or 44 years.
“You do what you got to do and I’m willing to do it,” says Mitchell Gore. He’s worked at Smurfit-Stone for four years.It is a major employer in the Brewton area. People like Gore have to reapply for the jobs they may have held for years. “I kind of wish they had a different policy for those already but understand it should be open to everyone."
That policy allows people like Doug Williams and others to try to get hired on, “I’m just hoping to get my foot in the door that’s what I’m hoping for.”
Folks in line say they were told 10 to 15 percent of current employees won’t be rehired but everyone waits in line hoping to be one of the 150 that will get in during this session.
This is also the first chance to check out the new boss says Gore, “It’s not just about if they’d like to hire you but if they’re a company that you’d want to work for.”
By the looks of the line that wraps around the Brewton Community Center, Georgia-Pacific is a company hundreds want to work for.
Job fairs will continue Thursday at 9:00 a.m., 5:00 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., then again next week, August 22 and 23, at the same times, both days.
