The Alabama Department of Public Health has given the green light for kindergarten, first and third graders to return to Spanish Fort Elementary's main campus on Monday.
The campus has been closed since painters discovered lead paint while sandblasting during the Christmas break. When school resumed in January, the Baldwin County School District had to find places for students. Two local churches opened their doors.
Fifth grade students will remain at Faith Family Fellowship. Second and 4th graders will continue attending classes at the Prodisee Center which is run by Spanish Fort United Methodist Church.
On Monday, kindergarten, 1st and 3rd graders will be back on Spanish Fort Elementary's main campus, even though the cleanup is not yet complete. The health department says students will be kept a safe distance away from the 18 classrooms that are still being decontaminated.
Spanish Fort school officials say the 6th grade building is "very close to being ready." An announcement about when 6th graders can return will be made as soon as the building is cleared by the health department.
