Mobile Fire Department hazardous materials crews were called to the Alabama State Docks this morning just before 3am for a small chemical leak. A container filled with chloracetic acid was being offloaded from a ship onto the docks when it overturned. The container was uprighted around 6:30am.

Mobile Fire Department spokesman Steve Huffman says the leak was due to overfilling the container and was very small. There was no outside threat to the public at any time. He says that the container weighed a total of 23 metric tons. One female worker was transported to a local hospital for precautionary reasons, but Huffman says she will be fine.

The hazards to humans from chloracetic acid are inhalation, ingestion, and skin contact.

WAY to go HAZ-MAT team!good job! IT’s been a long time since i had to wear a self contained and then not very often, but i think you people will be getting a real workout here in the future due to the increase in port business and other large companies coming to town.A potential disaster is right around the curve.
