Monday's heavy rains added to an already dangerous situation for some Mobile County students, but it may also finally get them the help they need. The only sidewalk between Bayou La Batre's Alba Middle School and nearby neighborhoods is covered with grass, weeds and now mud. Neighbors say the problem first started after Hurricane Katrina but gets worse with every storm, and kids are often forced to walk in the road.
"It's overgrown," said Wanda Ladnier, who works across the street at Small Wonders daycare. "There was a dead possum that laid over there forever until the rain kinda washed it off," she said.
After several complaints and one close call with a student almost getting hit by a car, crews from the Department of Transportation began clearing the sidewalk Tuesday. Alba Middle School principal James Gillis says Monday's rain may have also been a factor.
"There was some extensive flooding out there, so it's great to see the crews out here," said Gillis.
Gillis says at least 100 students walk home from school and many use that sidewalk. He's glad to finally see it cleaned up.
