Former Alabama Governor Don Siegelman was released on bond just after 11:00 a.m. from a federal prison in Oakdale, Louisiana.His release was approved late Thursday by the 11th Circuit Court of Appeals in Atlanta.
Siegelman had been in federal custody for nine months after being convicted on bribery and other charges.
The former Governor was on the verge of tears when he walked out of prison wearing grey sweat paints, a sweatshirt and cut off T-shirt.
"I may have lost freedom for a while, but I never lost faith," Siegelman said. "Right now, and I'm sure you understand, I want to be with my family for a few days. I will be prepared to make a statement later this evening in Birmingham."
News 5's Tiffany Craig is in Oakdale. She says Siegelman is frail and has lost a lot of weight since he went to prison.
