Attention sex offenders and murderers: Do you need a place to live?

A Dog River couple is getting ready to rent out rooms. They say people in their neighborhood are trying to get rid of them and its payback time.

You can't miss the FOR RENT signs. They're posted in the yard and the trees!

Bobby White says he's fed up with the neighbors. "I will be here renting out rooms to sex offenders and ex-murderers and ex-thieves! They forced me into this as long as they are not on parole or on paper. I can rent out rooms to whoever I like."

White says he and his partner Giles Ham can't live on Riverview Avenue in Peace. "I've been threatened at the mailbox of being shot. Our house has been threatened to be burned down."

Their Dog River neighbors like Eleni Tyler says that the signs just popped up one day. "They've got signs up and I'm having to explain to my daughter what this means. The neighborhood is extremely upset about it."

It's no secret that Ham was convicted of a sex crime in 1990. Everyone got the notice.

Tyler claims an inappropriate comment was made to her 11-year old daughter. "They were cat calling her Hey Baby and their excuse was they were looking for their dog."

White says the couple wanted to move but they can't do that either. He says the real estate agents have been harassed too "If they want us to leave so bad, leave our real estate alone." News 5's Tiffany Craig says, "That doesn't make sense! If they don't want you here why would they mess up the selling house process?" White replies, "I have no idea."

If their house doesn't sell by December 20th, the doors of the 3500 square foot house open up for rent.

So far, three people have applied to rent a room. There's room for ten!

Neighbors are making calls to try and get the signs taken down!

Both sides have called the cops. Mobile Police say nothing criminal is going on.

BUT SEX OFFENDERS WERE ABOUT *FOUR TIMES MORE LIKELY* THAN NON-SEX OFFENDERS TO BE ARRESTED FOR ANOTHER SEX CRIME AFTER THEIR DISCHARGE FROM PRISON—5.3 PERCENT OF SEX OFFENDERS VERSUS 1.3 PERCENT OF NON-SEX OFFENDERS.

This number is reached based on the small amount of sex offenders, verses the large number of other criminals.  So if you read on you will still see that sex offenders have one of the lowest rates of recidivism.  What they are still saying is that only 1.3% of the large group commited a sex crime, were as the small group had 5.3% commited sex crimes.  And of those only 3.5% were convicted. You realy hate this group of people and that is your right, but you should look at all the facts.  Do we realy want to spend all of money we are on sex offenders who are a low or no risk to reoffend. No make them all pay for testing to see who is at the highest risk to re-offend and put them on a sex offender registry. Let law enforcement keep an extra watch on those dangerus ones

WASHINGTON, D.C.—Within 3 years following their 1994 state prison release, 5.3 percent of sex offenders (men who had committed rape or sexual assault) were rearrested for another sex crime, the Justice Department’s Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) announced today. If all crimes are included, 43 percent of sex offenders were rearrested for various offenses.

Sex offenders were less likely than non-sex offenders to be rearrested for any offense –– 43 percent of sex offenders versus 68 percent of non-sex offenders.

NORMO or what ever your name is, you are wrong on sex offenders re-offending. The US Dept. Of Justice says they are the lowest group of criminals to reoffend. 3.5 % are re-convicted within 3 years of release from prison. I know you do not think that is true but go the US Dept. Of Justice web sight and look at the statistics on reicidivism. As for this person I do not know if he will re-offend or not as our elected officals have not passed a law that will protect us and that is to force all sex offenders to pay for testing that showes their danger of re-offending. Then only place the high risk offenders on a public sex offender registry. Tim P Retired Cop

redjoey, your rantings are reminiscent of the hate-filled drivel written by Matthew Murray (The Colorado Springs Shooter) before his rampage. Your hatred for “religious fundamentalists” is clouding your judgment.

Think about it, you have no evidence that “religious fundamentalists” are even involved here. You are simply taking the word of a homosexual activist and a convicted sex offender as the truth, despite the fact that their story doesn’t make sense. I believe that the neighbors are the real victims here; victims of the bigotry and hatred that is consistently espoused by many Kirk and Madsen homosexual activist types.

GoodFamilyValues, If you really are the sibling of Mr. Ham, (forgive me if I seriously doubt claims made on an internet board), then you should realize that actions have consequences.

Sex offenders are notorious for re-offending. That’s just a fact, hence the need for sex offender registries. Let me guess, you oppose such registries.

I also hate to break it to you, Mr. Ham is a pedophile. Engaging in Sodomy with a 15 year old is pedophilia, like it or not. If you take that step, you take the label that comes with it. Whether or not he ever did it again is irrelevant, he still committed a vile, despicable, and pedophile act on a young man, who is probably damaged for the rest of his life.

I am a victim of a very religious and fundamentalist upbringing .The persecution these two men are recieving requires a retaliation just as severe. I applaud the creativity in these men . If we can not be allowed to live normal productive lives without fear and predjudice, then why should the people inflicting those things be allowed to continue their hate mongering unopposed. I hope you buy more houses in the neighborhood and use them for rehabilitation centers and drive their property values into the ground!!!

I am the sibling of Mr. Ham.  We were raised in a very good home with excellent parents here in the Mobile area.  My brother made a huge mistake 17 years ago and went to prison for his offense.  He has since tried to make a decent life for himself but has to constanly struggle due to the fact that even though he paid for his crime and has never offended again, his debt to society will never be completely paid.  My brother is not a pedofile.  He and Mr. White, although a bit dramatic, are two of the most giving people I know.  Because of the harassment they have received from their neighbors, my parents are also having to suffer.  My mother received a sex offender flyer from someone in the mail 2 weeks ago and this unknown person even wrote “Merry Christmas” on the back of the envelope.  Since this news story broke, my mother has received visits as well as phone calls from reporters as far away as New York.  If my brother can’t provide for himself; do you want your tax dollars to.

Interesting. I just did a search on the Alabama sex offender registry, and I realize exactly what kind of sex offense Mr. White’s “partner” was convicted of.

I think this fact should have been detailed a bit more in the report. This wasn’t just a “peeping tom” conviction from 10 years ago. It was Sodomy of a 15 year old!

IOW Pedophile.

hgoham, please seek professional help. Your hatred and persecution complex is showing.

Not only am I not Mrs. Tyler’s husband, I don’t even live in Alabama. The fact that you would make such a baseless and nonsensical accusation shows how delusional bigots can be.

I made a comment on the news story. I don’t believe Mr. White. I don’t think the reporter did either from her reaction to Mr. White’s claims that the neighbors were stopping them from moving. As the reporter explained, IT DOESN’T MAKE SENSE!

Nothing in Mr. White Story seems to be truthful, nor does it make logical sense. Homosexual activists like to play the Kirk and Madsen strategy and play the victim card, when in reality, many times they are more bigoted than those they claim are persecuting them. Your comments are a perfect example.

Something like this could only happen in Alabama. But hey, at least we’re not Mississippi. (And no, i’m not saying gay discrimination only happens in Alabama. Get a sense of humor.)
