remove the state sales tax from groceries cleared another
legislative hurdle today.
The Senate Finance and Taxation Committee voted 7-0 to approve
the proposed amendment, which passed the House earlier.
The measure now goes to the Senate. It would remove the state's
4 percent sales tax on groceries and replace the lost revenue by
eliminating the state income tax deduction for federal taxes paid.
If approved by the Senate, it will go on the general election
ballot November 4th to see if a majority of voters statewide will
put it into the Alabama Constitution.
The bill's sponsor, Montgomery Representative John Knight,
called the committee's vote an important step "toward tax
fairness."
