Violet Deas is one of the many people living in this Semmes neighborhood on McCrary road in shock after yesterday’s accident.

” He was a 16-year-old kid, it just breaks my heart,” says Violet. “It's hard for me to handle.” David Velez was walking with a friend yesterday afternoon when he was hit by a motor home. 68-year-old Burnice Dredings Jr. was behind the wheel. He hasn’t been charged yet, but state troopers say alcohol may have been involved.

Donald Davenport was with his son in the front yard yesterday afternoon. They were picking up sticks as he watched the whole thing happen.

“They were off the road in the other driveway,” says Davenport. “Maybe a foot or so and the van swerved over and struck the young boy.” Davenport says he rushed his son inside and then tried to help the young men. David was flown to USA medical center and later pronounced dead. The friend who was walking with him was in shock.

“He was able to jump out of the way and his friend was not,” says Lori Williams. “I just put my arm around him, like I said he was very shaken up.” In order to calm the boy, she says she turned immediately to the Lord.

“I asked him 'did he know Jesus?'” says Lori. “I told him Jesus could help him through anything that's who he needed to rely on right now.”

This comment was posted by Suzie Q, a wonderful lady.

On Sunday, December 23rd a 16 year old boy was struck and killed by a RV.  David Valez was mexican and his family only had him to depend on.  The mom and dad do not speak english, David learned English quickly and he was the only they communicated with everyone.  They live in Wilmer and the dad has been out of work for 3 weeks, they have no Christmas, tree or anything.  Please if you can help this family, this story has broken my family’s heart, this is a senseless tragedy that could have been avoided.  He was a great kid and he will be greatly missed by his friends.  He has a 2 year old sister and today we went to their home and they had no food.  We have to reach real people in our community to help them during these very sad situations.  They live in a small house across from the Wilmer Community Center, they are also having a hard time communicating with the morgue and all of the issues that have to be solved during a death.  Please find room in your hearts to reach out to this family.

Hi name is Paul Velez, I’m David’s cousin and I live in Southern California.  I was informed only minutes ago of his death and my family is frantically searching for contact information so that we may help them in their time of need. We are unable to find a current address or phone number. If anyone has any contact information please call me at 210-849-8084 or email me at . My uncle, Davids father, was a police officer in Mexico.  He lost his life in the line of duty and was also tragically hit by a car.  Any information would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

Sgt. Velez
