The future site of Saraland's new high school lies near Chickasabogue Creek. The Saraland School Board says this 83 acre area will include a football stadium, fields for baseball, softball, soccer and a lake side environmental study center. The estimated cost is just under 30 million dollars. It is what the Saraland School Board says they have to build after they split from the Mobile County School system.
"We did not think that we were getting adequate funding and construction and maintenance from the Mobile County School System," said Bill Silver, Saraland School Board.
The split will go into effect next fall, leaving Saraland with Saraland elementary and Nelson Adams Middle school. Which means students already attending Mobile County High Schools will have to wait until the new high school opens in August of 2009 to attend. But they have options.
"Students who are going to high school somewhere else the county agreed to let them stay in those schools until they finish it," said Silver.
The school board says the new school will be funded by an approved half cent sales tax increase.
Zachary Cunningham says he cannot wait to have the option of attending a brand new high school in his hometown. Cunningham goes to school in Satsuma. And he already has an opinion, when it comes to a school mascot.
"Oh I think I'd go for the Spartans. How come? Because it sounds like they're tough, "said Cunningham.

congrats to saraland i have lived there and it is a great place to live. i am a graduate of murphy high school ,however the entire state of alabama let their public schools get to a low level of education. i moved out of the state to get my child a better education. i hope saraland has learned from mobile county and does not repeat their mistakes.

If Saraland can develop a school system where the children are the priority, I will move to that jurisdiction and pay 30% tax on every dollar I spend there!! To many big mac attacks around. I tend to think more about my children than my gut!!

I live in Saraland and was just wondering who can tell me what our tax will be now?  Like 10%?  I have one child in high school and two others in elementary school and when my oldest graduates, it will be good riddance to Saraland-so-expensive.  With all of the elitism and stuck-up folks who live here, I will be only too happy to be gone.
