The reason: Major David Waite said, "The Salvation Army is concerned that we are not responsible for giving a child a toy that would contain lead."
Millions of toys made in China have already been recalled from retail store shelves because of concerns over lead paint.
Major Waite said, "We have all the lists of all the toys that are being recalled, and we're going through and matching whatever we might have, and we have found some."
But the Salvation Army says it would rather pull all the used toys from its shelves to be safe.
Cheri Bentley of Mobile was looking for clothes at one of the thrift stores Monday.
When asked about the decision to pull the toys, she said, "I think it's a must, I mean, you've got to save people's health and children's health so, yeah, get the lead out."
But getting rid of the toys for good may turn out to be another problem.
Major Waite said, "We can't destroy them because if they have lead in them, we can't put them in the trash."
