Firefighters responded to a fire alarm at the Riverview Plaza Office Building, located at 63 South Royal Street, early Wednesday morning. The call was received from the alarm company at approximately 3:42 a.m. and firefighters arrived 5 minutes later to begin checking the source of the alarm. As firefighters entered the hotel portion of the complex, they noticed a light flashing on an upper level floor of the office building. As firefighters moved in the direction of the office building they discovered water flowing through the sprinkler gong.
Firefighters had to force entry into the building and upon entry discovered heavy water and light smoke coming from the eighth floor. As they made their way to the eighth floor they discovered a small fire had occurred in an office on that floor.
Fire Investigators discovered that a small desk top copier machine, which was sitting on the floor, had caught fire and activated a single sprinkler head above it, which extinguished the fire, preventing it from spreading further. There was some smoke damage on the eighth floor and water damage throughout.
No injuries were reported and no damage estimate is available at this time.
Engines 3, 8, 11, truck 4, rescue 3 and District Chief Billy Roach responded.
