allow the pre-kindergarten program for 4-year-olds to add more than
1,100 students across the state.
Gov. Bob Riley held a ceremonial signing for the budget Thursday
at a pre-kindergarten program in Prattville. Riley actually signed
the $6.36 billion budget on Monday.
The budget cuts many facets of education due to the national
economic slowdown, but it doubles the funding for pre-kindergarten
programs to $20 million.
State officials said the program will expand in August from
2,250 students to 3,384.
The director of the state Office of School Readiness, Marquita
Davis, said the pre-kindergarten program is small, but it has
received national recognition for preparing students for success in
school.
