Truman has died.
Margaret Truman Daniel died in Chicago after a brief illness.
She was 83.
The Harry S. Truman in Library and Museum in Independence,
Missouri, says Daniel had been in an assisted living facility for
the past several weeks and was on a respirator.
Daniel was thrust into the national spotlight as a college
student when her father became president in 1945.
She launched her singing career a few years later, performing
with Detroit Symphony Orchestra and at Carnegie Hall. Critics,
however, received her with less than rave reviews. In one
well-known incident, her father wrote an angry letter to a critic
on White House stationery.
Later, Daniel turned to radio and television broadcasting as
well as the theater. She was also the author of an autobiography, a
biography of her father and several mysteries set in Washington.
