Pope Benedict has made his harshest criticismyet regarding the clergy sex abuse scandal that has damaged the
U.S. church. He told America's Roman Catholic leaders the crisis
has sometimes been "very badly handled."
Benedict's remarks came at a prayer service with hundreds of
American bishops at a national shrine in Washington.
Earlier, thousands turned out to see the pontiff on the White
House lawn, where his 81st birthday was celebrated with President
Bush, complete with choruses of "Happy Birthday" and a big cake.
Benedict and Bush spoke in the Oval Office for 45 minutes after
the ceremony. A joint statement said the two leaders "reaffirmed
their total rejection of terrorism" and any use of religion to
justify immoral and violent acts against civilians.
