There's something new on the streets of Mobile to catch car thieves, and Mobile Police say its working. The premise is as simple as catching fish with bait.
Police have started placing what they call "bait cars" in high crime areas.
The cars are specially modified.
They have hidden cameras and remote-controlled devices.
Mobile Police Chief Phillip Garrett said, "Once an individual takes the car, we're able to take a switch and cut off the engine and lock the doors."
Police say since the program started more than two months ago, they've arrested nine people.
Chief Garrett said, "You can take the technology and move it from car to car so it’s not just a particular car. We're going to be out there again and we'll probably change the cars."
Police remind everyone that one of the best ways to keep your car from being stolen is to take the keys with you.
