Police in Kansas City, Missouri say a man tried to use a toad to get high. The 21 year old was arrested and charged with possession of a Colorado River toad with the intention of using it as a hallucinogenic.
The toad produces a mild venom from glands as a defense mechanism.
Scientists say this venom contains chemicals from the family of hallucinogenic tryptamines.
The prosecutor in Kansas City told a news station that the venom can make people sick and in some cases could kill small children and pets.
The toad is in custody at a police crime lab in Kansas City.
