Mobile County Sheriff Sam Cochran is discussing the possibility of starting an inmate landscaping program what will service local municipalities and non-profits in an effort to save taxpayers money and beautify the area. Last month, the Sheriff's Office conducted a trial run of the service. Cochran says it was a great success: "The inmate crew provided quality work and we were able to cut our costs by more than half." Officials are now proposing to make the service permanent, assigning an inmate work crew to specific landscaping and ground maintenance jobs around the county. Cochran admits the program is still in its early stages, but he champions the inmate landscaping service as a way to " help local businesses that wouldn’t otherwise have the funding or manpower to complete these grounds projects." He also adds, "This program will provide a way for inmates to learn valuable skills while contributing to the beautification of Mobile County."

What do you think about the Sheriff's proposal? Is it a good idea? Potentially dangerous? A good rehabilitating tool or a way for criminals to get around their jail sentences? Sound off in the comments section below.

This sounds like a really good idea. I certainly hope it works out well.

Now that I know where my used Nike shoes came from, I would like to personally thank you, KxVx. You must be the one who donated them to Goodwill so that I could finally afford a pair. They cost me $2.00

I THINK THEY SHOULD DO IT AND DROP TAXES.. INMATES SIT UP IN THE JAIL GETTING FOOD,A BED, AND WHATEVER ELSE THAT THE TAX PAYERS PAY FOR.. MAKE THEM GET OUT THERE AND DO LANDSCAPING AND ANYTHING ELSE THEY CAN DO TO SAVE TAX PAYERS MONEY.. ITS GETTING HARD NOW TO MAKEIT WITH THE GAS AND FOOD PRICES GOING UP…

I THINK THAT IT IS A GREAT IDEA. THEY SHOULD HAVE TO WORK TO PROVIDE FOR THEMSELVES JUST LIKE EVERYONE ELSE. I AGREE W/EVERYTHING “WAIT4ME” STATED…..

I’ve been saying for years that we should turn our prisons into sweat shops. Why am I paying $150 for a pair of Nike shoes that were made for $0.10 by some 8 year old kid in a third world country? What could the overhead be? It must be the shipping costs, right? Well if we have the children of third world countries making shoes, clothes, soccer balls, and just about everything else you can buy at the store, why can’t prisoners?

If the program is structured right its a great idea, they have this in other states already, but there going to have to think like a criminal to keep it under control because it will get out of control real quick..bad apples and all

Sounds good for non-violent type offenders. In fact, it sounds a lot like community service.  What’s the difference?

Not sure about the private property idea.  We all know how that works out.  A few select people will have all sorts of slave labor working their Springhill yards and hand scrubbing their floors.

Good point! most people on welefare dont want to work! lets face it who does? most on that program have 5 kids and a live in boyfriend that makes 80,000 a year, kinda like the guy standing on the corner asking to work for food, my father in law actually offerd one a job one time and this guy refused it!!

Why stop with prisoners working to make the county better, which I believe is a great idea. Why not have the welfare, and other hand-out recipients, that are not disabled, work around the county picking up garbage, cleaning county/government office buildings and handling small things that we are paying the county employees to do. This having to work to collect the check might lead some of them to go get a real job because the pay and benifits would be better. Just my 2 cents

Get them working to plant sugar cane or whatever they are using in other places for alternate fuel!
