MIAMI (AP) - Saying seven men planned attacks "greater thanNine-Eleven," a prosecutor has urged a Miami jury to convict seven
men accused of conspiring to blow up Chicago's Sears Tower and
government buildings.
The men are dubbed the "Liberty City Seven," after the
inner-city section of Miami where they allegedly formed their
organization.
Federal prosecutors say they were part of a homegrown terrorism cell seeking
alliance with al-Qaida.
Prosecutor Jacqueline Arango replayed a dramatic piece of
evidence in closing argument -- a videotape of an oath-taking
ceremony where the men pledged loyalty to Osama bin Laden and to be
ready for holy war. The oath was led by an F-B-I informant -- the
group never had any actual contact with the terror organization.
Defense lawyers say group members were trying to scam money from
the supposed al-Qaida operatives, and didn't have any intention of
carrying out any terrorist acts.
The jury could get the case late today or tomorrow.
