Students and teachers at Spanish Fort Elementary returned to school today after an extended Christmas vacation. The school has been closed since last week, when lead paint was discovered by work crews. But classes were held in unfamiliar areas for students and faculty.

"We're holding classes at three area churches," says Baldwin County School Supt. Doctor Faron Hollinger. "The pastors have been gracious enough to help us and we're going to get on with providing education for our children."

Church parking lots were packed with confused students and parents...but school officials say the first day back was a success.

"We're getting right back to business," says 4th grade teacher Kelly Knapp. "It's back to work for everyone."

"The community has helped us with supplies for our classrooms," says teacher Mary Armstrong. "18 teachers, including myself, have lost everything in our classrooms because of the lead paint. Everything in our rooms is contiminated so the donations are really helping."

Spanish Fort Elementary could be closed for another eight days.

My child is a 6th grader at Spanish Fort. This school is having to throw EVERYTHING in the 6th grade building away. Teachers have asked parents to purchase supplies for the classes to use… pencils, paper, scissors, staples, staplers, paper clips, paper towels, germ-X, etc… It would nice if this could get announced on the news. Any supplies can be dropped off at any of the 3 churches where they are holding school .Any help would be greatly appreciated.
