We have an update to a story we first told you about Tuesday on News 5. A dozen pit bulls seized from a home in Semmes will be returned to their owner. Mobile County Animal Control and Mobile Police showed up, after a neighbor complained. Animal control took away 13 dogs from the property and investigated to see if the animals were used for dog fighting. Humane Officer Carmelo Miranda says the owner came forward and told his side of the story. Miranda says he won't be charged right now, but if he doesn't comply with their requirements, he could be charged with Animal Cruelty in the future. "Basically it was an owner that used poor judgement." Miranda said. "He had an injured dog on his property. He had several injured dogs and instead of taking these dogs to a vet and having them take care immediately, he thought by leaving them on the property and waiting for the vet to come when he, when he could, was sufficient." One of the dogs seized Tuesday had to be put down because of it's injuries.

Ditto on the rest of the story, geogt72.  Since you are so defensive of the person who owned the 13 dogs, what is the real story?  One animal was put to sleep after a lack of care.  Why does anyone need 13 dogs if they are unable to care for them?

I’m perfectly willing to hear the “whole story” about those 13 pit bulls. Bring it on. What are the facts behind this, George72? Apparently you have facts that I don’t have, so please tell them to me.

And while you’re at it, tell me where you get the idea that I’m writing to someone? Nothing in my post refers to writing.

Consequences come as a result of our action or inaction in this case. Consequences should be thought of first, not as an afterthought. would someone jump off a bridge just to see what would happen? Or would they think of the consequences first-death, paralysis? I think the point of this is that whoever owns these animals, needs to be monitored. The vet(if there was one) needs to be interviewed as to their take on the care of the persons animals. If the person is usually responsible and take care of their animals and this was just a case of several dogs fighting and getting injured, then point taken. But it would seem that with so many dogs injured and one so critically that it had to be put down, that the person did not have the welfare of the animals in mind. Vets make house calls, and can be there within an hour or two for emergencies. There are always the emergency clinics that have vets 24/7. I would personally like to know “the whole story and the rest of the story,“ too.

And no one said that the owner of those dogs should be hung in the town square either.  But the dogs also shouldn’t have been returned.  Since they were given back though, the humane investigators need to monitor the situation.  If a dog died after the owner neglected the injuries, it could easily happen again.

Isn’t it typical that the people posting on the site that are pro-animal abuse are the hostile, angry ones that don’t really read the posts.  They just want to rant and vent.  Where in the world did all this about Jews and Nazi’s come in?  I am completely lost after reading geogt72’s comments.  These dogs were abused to such a degree that someone had the common sense and decency to report it to cruelty investigators.  Could the injury have been an accident?  Sure.  Dogs fight and play and get injured but to knowingly sit by and wait for a vet to make a house call - well, that’s just unacceptable and falls into the neglect category.  So geogt72 instead of jumping on the band wagon with the owner of those dogs, since you obviously care about animals, get off your soap box about Nazis and Clint Eastwood and look at the real issue here.  Sometimes anger is blinding - take your glasses off.

It makes it clear why many people are afraid to report abuse and cruelty in the first place after reading the posts from Geogt72.  There are so many hostile, angry people in the world like this.  Transfer some of that frustration to an appropriate cause and stand up for animal rights.  Don’t defend their abusers.

Yes,rmseek1234,it was extreme, and I do think that if one can’t care for their pet, then that person shouldn’t have a pet,get a plant or something.I know I’ve already beat this to death,(oops, there I go beating things) but who are we to pass judgement upon someone without knowing the whole story.Go ahead and start writing to whom ever you want about what ever you want, carolyn, thats your right as an American!!!!! I myself will think about the consequences and how it might effect others, first, before I start writing and demanding “something be done about this or that”.Remember “careful what you wish for” and all that good stuff,or if you remember movies better than nazi Germany, the movie “Hang ‘em high” starring Clint Eastwood is a good example of assuming guilt before knowing the whole truth.

I would venture to say that given geogt72’s obvious hostility that he or she is either the owner of the 13 dogs that were seized or has first hand knowledge of the situation.  Too much hostility there.  If one of the dogs had to be put down because of injuries and a lack of medical care, then the other remaining dogs should be adopted out and that person should not be allowed to have pets.  In Mobile county it takes a near act of congress to get anything done about abuse and cruelty cases so this particular situation must’ve been pretty bad.  geogt72’s way off base and irrational.  Go post on some sight for zealots or stay on topic.  This is a forum dealing with animal abuse and cruelty cases, not ethnicity and execution.  None of us have said “death to all dog owners.“  You have totally misinterpreted the posts of each and every person here.

The dogs were seized. That tells me the situation must have been pretty bad. Animal control doesn’t step in because a dog has an abcess. I have a part pit, too, and with the best of care, animals can be injured. But if any of my animals are injured, I get them medical attention. That’s responsible ownership. I don’t leave them in the yard to suffer and die. And one of those dogs had to be euthanized because it was so badly injured.

And you are the one jumping the gun. I said animal abusers should be punished. That’s a general statement. I am curious as to how you’ve drawn the Jewish people into this conversation—comparing them to animals abusers? There is no logic there, my friend.

Isn’t it interesting what we reveal about ourselves?

OK geog72,

You are right, dogs do get hurt, sometime through no fault of our own. But as responsible owners, we are entrusted to provide medical care for them when needed. Poor judgment was the term used, but I think it is more than poor judgment when one dog is so critically injured that it has to be euthanized that day-in other words, there was no hope of it being treated and surviving. The owner still bears watching, in my opinion-because 13 dogs showed signs of injury. Isn’t that a little extreme?
