An Escambia County Pit Bull might have been one of those sad statistics so often associated with dog fighting. But, thanks to a Good Samaritan he has a fighting chance to live a normal life.

"I really wanted to give this boy a chance." His name is Survivor. "He had massive wounds around his muzzle, his ears, his throat. He had some deep puncture wounds and his whole head was badly infected. It was just awful," says Laura Catterton who rescued the dog.

Survivor is an appropriate name for the dog that investigators believe was used as bait in dog fights.

"I think he either escaped or somebody threw him away, just let him go because he wasn't productive for them anymore," says Catterton.

Laura Catterton was making a drive she know doubt has made a thousand times living in Cantonment. She came to the intersection of 297A and Highway 97 South and saw something lying near the road, she just didn't know what. "I noticed this hideous looking creature alongside the road, I didn't know what it was at first, I pulled over and saw this pit bull with massive injuries around its head and I knew then when I saw this dog I had to rescue him and get him straight to the clinic."

"Unfortunately we see it more than we would like to see it." Veterinarian Mike Elliott helped treat the dog. "He's wagging his tail; he's a friendly dog in good shape actually in spite of his wounds. Most of it was infection and laceration to his face from all the bites. He's doing very well."

For now, Survivor has a new home and a new lease on life. "After what he'd been through I thought he deserved one good chance," says Catterton, and that’s just what he’s gotten.

There is a seven thousand dollar reward being offered for information leading to the arrest and conviction of those responsible for the condition of the dog. Meanwhile, more than 300 e-mails and phone calls have come in from all over the country wanting to help Survivor.

Anyone who might have information that can help deputies find the person responsible for the abuse is asked to call Crimestoppers at 850.433.STOP.

This lady did a very heroic thing. So many people would have driven by and done nothing. You went the extra mile to save this animal. The person who was responsible for this dogs injuries is a coward. It is not macho to watch an animal maul another animal. It is sick. Get help!

I was under the impression that bait was an animal deemed weaker to incite the fighting dog to fight. Regardless as to whether this dog was bait or the horrible result of a dog fight-it is wrong and the person responsible should be prosecuted. But thank you all so much for posting on this subject. And while you are at it-would you PLEASE go to the other forum sites regarding animal cruelty, including dog-fighting and post there too? Animal abuse in general is a huge problem, that is essentially being ignored in Mobile. The process to report abuse is inefficient. The investigation and follow through is thoroughly lacking. There are quite a few concerned citizens that want to see this changed, and power comes in numbers. Please take a moment to post on the other forums so that all our voices will be heard. Thanks.

Pitdaddy,

According to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office, investigators believe quote—“the pit bull had not been used as a fighting dog but possibly used as a bait dog.”

I’m sorry you disagree with the term “bait,” but that is what the Sheriff’s Office calls it.

Jamie, a pit bull is not used in dogfighting as “bait”!  Sparring partner, maybe, but not bait.  That is a misnomer.  Check HSUS and PBRC websites for more information on dogfighting.  This is a complicated and despicable practice and must be stopped!  If you are going to report accurately on these situations, you need to be more informed.  However, thanks for your efforts!  Pitdaddy

As a dog lover I believe that who is responsible for the dog’s injuries should have the same treatment.
