Wagging his tail and running around his pen at the Escambia County Humane Society, an 18-month-old pit bull named Batman hardly looks like he was in a dog fight less than two days ago.
Working on an anonymous tip, Animal Cruelty Investigator Renee Jones says undercover officers set up a sting Tuesday afternoon to bust the dog's owner. Investigators contacted Dale Lynn Carnley, 26, pretending to be buyers wanting to purchase the one time fighting champion. Jones says Carnley bragged to undercover agents about a recent win.
"He continued to talk about the fight and how well the dog did and showed the wounds," said Jones.
Animal control officers say they found Batman in a cage in the back of Carnley's pickup truck. They also found two pit bull puppies and three more grown pit bulls. None of those dogs had fighting wounds.
Jones says all the animals must now be examined to determine whether they are adoptable.
This is not Carnley's first run in with police. The 26-year-old has a rap sheet dating back to 1999. Carnley has served jail time for drug charges, theft and robbery.
He is now charged with dog fighting and cruelty to a dog. Both charges are felonies carrying penalties of up to 20 years in prison.
Carnley's bond was set at $15,000, but he'll remain in jail for violating his probation.
