Sheriff's deputies in Escambia County, Florida, say a man accused of shooting his common-law wife in the head turned himself in. Investigators say Reginald Smith went the sheriff's office Thursday morning, casually walked in the front door and turned himself in.

"He came to the front door, walked up to the main desk and said I'm the guy you're looking for," says Escambia County Sheriff's Office spokesman Glenn Austin. "That's when we brought him upstairs and started asking him questions."

Smith has been charged with murder. Deputies say Smith shot and killed Mary Ann Spencer at their home in the Ensley community Wednesday evening. Spencer's family members say they're glad Smith turned himself in.

"It's exactly what needed to happen," says Doyla Clark, Spencer's sister-in-law. "He needed to do this because the longer he stayed out there, the worse it was going to be for him and everyone else involved."

Smith is being held without bond in the Escambia County Detention Center.
