If voters approve the "Pay As You Go" program Tuesday, Baldwin County drivers will see more road construction and newly paved streets. The proposal is on the Baldwin County ballot as a special county bond and tax election. The proposal calls for a 73 million dollar countywide road improvement project, which would be funded by taxpayers.

"Property owners would pay an additional four mills ad valorem tax," says Baldwin County Engineer Cal Markert. "Four mills is point 004 percent of a dollar, so if you have a 200-hundred thousand dollar home, it'll cost you about six dollars and 67 cents a month."

Many drivers News 5 spoke to say they'd like to see better roads and wider streets. Others say they don't support the ad valorem tax because of the sluggish economy and high gas prices.

"If voters approve this, it'll help maintain our roads and help build new ones," says Markert. "And people here in Baldwin County want that good quality of life and expect it."

I’m dissapointed to see that it failed. This program would have really helped out.
