JACKSON, Miss. (AP) - About 60 workers from India have called
for a Pascagoula oil rig construction company to stop exploiting
guest workers and to pay fair wages and benefits.
The rally today (Thursday) at the state Capitol in Jackson was
to protest what the workers called "salvery-like conditions" at
Signal International.
The workers also claim that they were promised residency status
in the United States in exchange for labor.
The group left New Orleans yesterday (Wednesday). They plan to
be in Montgomery, Alabama. tomorrow (Friday).
They plan to be in Washington D.C. by March 26th. Once there,
they hope to meet with Congressman George Miller of California.
Miller is chairman of the House Education and Labor Committee.
A federal lawsuit filed March 7th by a group of workers from
India accuses Signal International of subjecting the immigrant
workers to forced labor and poor living conditions at its
facilities in Pascagoula and Orange, Texas.
Signal says several federal agencies, including the Labor
Department, reviewed the company's employment practices and
facilities and found them in compliance with the law.
The company also dismissed the suit's allegations as "baseless
and unfounded."

The Worst part about this story is that the conditions here are better than in India.  If they were back in India they would be making about 3 bucks a day.
