Chevron has a firefighting crew and they were able to contain the fire in just a couple of hours.
No one was hurt.
Fire and rescue crews from Jackson County and Pascagoula were at the refinery just in case help was needed.
Police officers blocked off Industrial Road, which leads to the refinery, for many hours.
The Southeast Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross and the Salvation Army were on hand and gave out water to rescue crews.
No word on how the refinery fire started.
A spokesperson for the refinery says he doesn't know yet how it will impact production and what that means for distribution.
The company's website reports the refinery operates 24 hours a day and processes about 330,000 barrels or 13.9 million gallons of crude oil per day. The website reports Chevron's facility in Pascagoula primarily produces motor gasoline, jet fuel and diesel fuel. The company website reports the Pascagoula refinery celebrated its 40th anniversary in 2003, and since Chevron began operation there in 1963, the refinery has grown to be the corporation's largest U.S. refinery and one of the top ten petroleum refineries in the United States. More than 1300 workers are employed at the refinery.
