Janis Worthington says it was love at first sight at Bark Avenue Pets."I was just drawn to this puppy and when it leaned up against the glass it was like, I had to take it,"Said Worthington. But when she took him home Tuesday, the animal wasn't the same.

"He was somewhat lethargic we just thought being a puppy he was tired and he had diarrhea,"Said Worthington. Worthington says she took him the veterinarian where the animal tested positive for Parvo. Jeanine Woods with the Mobile SPCA says Parvo is a very highly contagious virus that puppies get when they're not vaccinated."We have been able to save a couple of puppies that we have gotten with it, but generally you'll let the puppy go first, because it takes a very long time,"Said Woods.

But Worthington says her puppy ran out of time. "They said he was doing better the next day, which was yesterday..I called this morning (Thursday)..he was dead." While the store owner admits they have had two other Parvo scares since they opened two and a half years ago, he doesn't believe that was the case this time. "In my heart I think it was something else gastrointestinal, but nonetheless the treatment for Parvo would cover a lot of other different disorders,"Said Scott Enoch with Bark Avenue Pets.
Enoch says while the 8-week old Pomeranian was due for its nine week vaccination, he says Worthington bought the dog before then.
"We love everyone of the puppies that comes in our store, the babies are very important and you know I did not get in the business to compromise anything, especially life,"Said Enoch.

Bark Avenue Pets says they have quarantined two other dogs that were in contact with the Pomeranian and are doing a thorough clean up. The store owner says he is refunding Worthington the $872.00 she paid for the dog. The pet store also adds that they only do business with local reputable breeders.

I had a puppy mill dog once, a golden retreiver. He had epilepsy, hip dysplasia, and a whole lot of emotional problems. (yes, dogs get those.) He was the sweetest dog, but when I figured out why he was in the shape he was in, I vowed to always know exactly where my pets came from after that.

With a lot of love and care, my dog lived 12 years. But even with daily medication, he still had bad seizures from time to time, and it broke my heart each time it happened.

I am so sorry that she lost her dog; but, we need to let this be a wake-up call.  Pet Stores get their animals from puppy mills and puppy mills need to be shut down.  The conditions that the breeding animals live in are horrendous, and as this case shows, the resultant litters have health problems.  A puppy shouldn’t even be taken from it’s mother and littermates before 8 weeks, much less be up for sale.

The fact that this store has had 2 other parvo “scares” in the past two years should serve as a wakeup call that something is wrong.  I hope the authorities follow-up with an investigation of the store AND their “reputable local breeders”.

I would also like to see the store owner name the “reputable local breeders” that they do business with.
