Moms and dads jam packed truancy court in Downtown Mobile.

90 parents were ordered to be in court for not sending their kids to school in Mobile County.

So far in 2008, almost 1000 parents have been sent to court for their children's attendance problems at school.

Some parents had to explain why they let their kids stay home for 20, 50 and in one case...100 days!

Juvenile Judge Edmond Naman admits that most parents end up with a year of probation. "Yeah, probation is a great first step. If it doesn't work, is sending them to jail enough? I don't know. Whatever it takes, we're gonna try. We gotta get people making responsible decisions and make decisions not to have children and then forget about em. Too often, people just don't care about their children. For them, having children is a biological function only."

17 parents were also tested for drugs and ten failed. The drugs ranged from cocaine to marijuana.

My son started kindegarden in the Baldwin county school system this year, he has already missed 10 days do to illness. He has doctor’s excuse’s for every absence. He does not like to meet new people. So he is very shy and withdrawn. It is a battle every day for my wife to get him off to school. One problem is he has had 5 different teachers already this year. He is very strong willed. I would like to look into home schooling also, any info or websites would be appreciated…thanx

Just to let everyone know I am the one crying in the video. I was not crying because I am a drug user or because I was getting sentaced. There were other things that are tied into this case, but regarless, MY CASE WAS DISMISSED WITHOUT COURT COSTS! I WAS NOT FOUND GUILTY AT MY TRIAL! These news reporters went way too far on this one! They hurt people in so many ways with their lies and twisting the truth just to make it look like they had a great story! THIS IS THE REASON THAT I WATCH FOX 10 NEWS!

I meant without a calculator. I’m fired up and leaviing out words.  Everyone needs (next mistake), The most basic (last mistake, I think)

I believe the school system are ripping our children off. They are not getting an education. When a child cannot do simply math with a calculator (I mean add & sub)something is wrong. I know we are in a machine age. But everyone needs to know how to use their brain. One day that machine will fail. Every needs to know some common sense, but the schools are skipping be most basic and we have every dumb children, oh they may be fast on a computer but check on paper.

i agree as always barefootangel. i think if the public schools even with the pretty new buildings are still lacking in quality education. i do not blame the teachers. i blame the system.

I really had no idea how horrible the school system is.  I grew up in Mobile and went to UMS, Council, and Azalea and now I’m in college to become a teacher and as people were asking me where I want to teach, everyone in my family in Mobile says “she will not teach in the Mobile County Public School System” and I really agree with them, the things I have read, seen, heard have made me not want to teach here, which is sad b/c I have always wanted to come back and teach in my hometown.

I do not support the public school system in any shape, form or fashion. If I had a child of school age now, that child would be homeschooled.

i do not think sending parents to jail is the answer. there has to be another way.

By the way, my children were on the HONOR ROLL all year…always have been…In spite of them being “truant” from school. They have never had to be sent to the principle’s office either. My girls have also represented that school on many occasions! We have moved to another school, since the principle can’t seem to keep up with children or tell the truth at Saraland Elemntary, She lost my 6 yr old last year. The child was missing from the school grounds for right at an hour and Mrs. Clements never called the police ort anyone else who could help. April Brockmiller of Satsuma
