Curbside pickup of post consumer recyclable paper is going up in western Mobile County. About 250 more homes will soon have bins to take part in the program. The Mobile Paper Board Corporation has been recycling in its factory since the 1920’s

“We've increased it significantly just in the last year or two,” says general manager Chris Conrad. “So we expect it to grow I think it's about being a good steward of the resources we have.” The factory recycles 450 tons of paper a day, but only 50 tons a week come from post consumer waste. Conrad says most of their paper comes from businesses.

” They have a lot of material or merchandise they get in cardboard boxes,” says Conrad. “After they stock shelves those boxes are baled typically behind the store and we bring that in here.”

First the paper is ground into a paste. Impurities are sucked out and the slurry is strained and dried until it becomes nine-ply paper.
