The city of Prichard is trying to clear its books. Hundreds of thousands of dollars in unpaid fines are owed to the city. To get the cash, the city is giving people more than two months to clear up their debts without going to jail. It's called Operation Payback. Officials said the fines range from $100 to $1,000 and they're all for misdemeanor offenses. The unpaid fines date back all the way to the year 2000. "When you have this type of debt out there, those records remain open and that's a long paper trail you have to try to follow and so we need to try and clear this up," said Prichard spokesperson Nona Simmons.City officials say the majority of the unpaid fines in prichard are from people living in Mobile. Operation Payback officially begins on October 1st and ends on November 16th. Next week you can check to see if your name is among the hundreds owing money the city of Prichard by going to www.thecityofprichard.org or check the locally published newspaper at the Prichard Report. You can pay your fines at the Prichard Municipal Court at 216 E. Prichard Avenue, Monday thru Friday from 8:00 am until 5:00 pm. For questions and concerns: 251-452-7927 or 251-452-7806.
