(Friday) he won't seek the Senate seat vacated by Trent Lott.
Gov. Haley Barbour announced that he would appoint someone
Monday to fill the seat until a special election can be held Nov.

There had been widespread speculation that Barbour would choose
Pickering, one of Lott's GOP allies.
Pickering worked as a Lott aid on Capitol Hill before being
elected to the House in 1996.
Political insiders have long believed that he was being groomed
as Lott's Senate replacement.
The 44-year-old Pickering announced in August that he would not
seek a seventh term in House of Representatives because he wants to
spend more time with his family.
Now he says -- quote -- "I continue to stand by that decision
in relation to this Senate vacancy. I believe public service is an
honorable calling. But now is not my time." -- end quote
Pickering says he spoke with Barbour and asked him to remove his
name from consideration.
