MIAMI (AP) - Miami-Dade County police say the fatal shooting of
Washington Redskins safety Sean Taylor happened during a random
burglary and there are no indications that he was targeted or knew
his assailant.
Police also say there are no suspects and are asking for people
who might know something about the crime to come forward.
Robert Parker is the director of the police department. He says
evidence indicates that one or more intruders barged into Taylor's
home in Palmetto Bay on Monday in an attempted burglary. After a
confrontation inside the home, Taylor was shot once in the upper
leg and died a day later after losing a tremendous amount of blood.
No evidence links the shooting to Taylor. Parker calls it "a
random event." No details have been given about how the home was
entered. Police aren't releasing results of Taylor's autopsy or the 911 call made to
report the shooting.
But those close to him appear immersed in grief, not details.
At Taylor's high school, Gulliver Preparatory, hundreds gathered
for an emotional memorial this morning.
Speakers at the memorial sought to contrast the Taylor they knew
with the one often portrayed in the media by his lapses: a drunken
driving charge that was dismissed, his firings of two agents,
numerous fines and an incident two years ago in which he was
accused of brandishing a gun.
Arriana Marion went to high school with Taylor. She called him a
"phenomenal person" and says it's a shame everyone "thinks he's
this aggressive and mouthy athlete."
