Governor Bob Riley has decided not to call a special session of the Legislature.Riley notified Republican legislators that he couldn't get a bipartisan consensus to address ethics and insurance legislation in a special session.
He did not want to risk a repeat performance of the power struggle in the Senate this session, when bitter b-partisan differences kept virtually any significant legislation from being passed. Emotions ran so high that a fistfight broke out on the Senate floor. Republican Senator Charles Bishop punched Democartic Senator Lowell Barron in the head on the final day of the session.
Senate Majority Leader Zeb Little says Riley made a wise move because a special session would have been a waste of money.
Democratic legislative leaders had been encouraging the Republican governor to wait until the next regular session in February.
