MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - Legislation to ban smoking in the
workplace and most public places has won approval from an Alabama
Senate committee.
The Senate Education Committee voted 7-1 for the bill Thursday.
The bill, sponsored by Democratic Sen. Vivian Davis Figures of
Mobile, now goes to the Senate for consideration.
Figures said she is optimistic about Senate approval because the
bill has received a wide range of endorsements, including the
Senate Democratic Caucus.
Her bill would prohibit smoking in all workplaces and nearly all
public places, including restaurants. Entities exempted would
include bars that derive no more than 20 percent of their revenue
from food; hotel or motel rooms designated as smoking; private
clubs; nursing home or long-term care facility rooms in certain
situations; tobacco retail stores; and cigar bars.

Instead of everyonecalling Senetor Figures stupid, why don’t you actually look at what she’s doing. She’s making sure that the people who don’t smoke and have health problems just from second hand smoke already, have their rights to go somewhere freely without having to deal with others harmful decisions. Smoking around others is harmful, not smoking around others doesn’t cause any problems. If anything, I believe that smokers should be allowed free help to quit smoking since it’s so addictive and it would be better for everyone.

Again - this whole thing is completely stupid and a violation of EVERYONES rights. Its amazing how blindsided everyone has become. Since when does the government have any say in matters such as these??? Leave the decision to make a resturaunt, business, parking lot or playground smoke free to the owners of the said places, NOT the government. They might as well require me to wear sunglasses while driving, or ban the use of gasoline--which technically is far more dangerous than cigarette smoke....
Leave these decisions up to the business owners… NOT the government.

Its a shame they can’t let restaurants build an outside smoking area for us smokers.  Most restaurants have cut our smoking area down to nothing, or have banned it altogether anyway.  I have my “favorite” restaurants, the ones that do have a smoking area.

I’ll just have to quit eating out if it passes, and certainly won’t be voting for Ms Fugures ever again!

I agree strongly with this legislation to ban smoking in most public areas.  I don’t smoke and it stinks.  Smokers will become more mindful of the laws and adjust to the limitations or QUIT.  In a free country, you must obey the laws or there is consequences.  Smoking is dangerous for your health and the ones you love or expose to it.

Figures is an idiot. she isnt gonna stand a chance in Washington if she plans on running like she says she is. Stupid fool.  shes talkin about making change, she needs to worry about our economy, schools, jobless rate, minimum wage increases, etc.... there needs to be reforms for that, not her own personal vendetta against smokin because she has asthma.

Figures is a joke. people are losing their homes because they can’t afford insurance, schools are losing good teachers due to lack of funds, but the almighty senate will go after smoking. it should be banned but, this can be done on the city level. How about addressing the important issues. Again, Figures is just a joke.
