MONTGOMERY, Ala. (AP) - The Alabama House approved a historic
bill Tuesday that would remove the state sales tax from grocery
sales.
The House voted 63-38 to approve the proposed constitutional
amendment that would lower the overall tax bill for low and middle
income state residents, while increasing taxes for the more
well-to-do taxpayers.
If the measure receives final approval in the Senate, Alabama
voters will decide the issue in the Nov. 4 general election. To
make up for the lost grocery store tax revenue, the amendment would
end the state income tax deduction for federal income taxes paid.
The bill received the exact number of "yes" votes needed - 63
- to pass a constitutional amendment.

Great Point!  I guess I was under the assumption that there would not be any tax levied against groceries.  I certainly will not be voiting for this, and I will keep traveling to Florida to buy my groceries (and lottery ticket, to better their schools with).

I like the way the article is titled too.

NO MORE GROCERY TAX?

It should read “No More State Sales Tax on Groceries?”.

That is only 4%.

Your groceries will not be exempt from City or County taxes.

In the City of Mobile You will still be paying 5.5% taxes at the check-out.

What a way to make it look enticing.  Nothing like looking for that small print!  Too bad they could not just do like Florida does, no tax on groceries, and no fine print of where you have to make up that amount in state taxes.  What if I decide to buy all my groceries in Florida, am I exempt?

I won’t be voting for it either.  I am pretty sure that my husband and I are middle class economically, but by no means does tellitlikeitis support us through a government agency.

But I don’t mind paying for services that benefit those who are handicapped and not able to work.

working4u - Great Point - I wish the Media would say what this really means instead of helping Politicans trick everyone.  I have had to pay money to the state of Alabama every year since I started working.  I get the max taken out of my paycheck and still have to pay at the end of the year.  If I can not claim what I pay in Federal Taxes anymore I am sure the amount I pay Alabama would probally double or triple

Talking about making manure taste good. The state will collect more taxes from taypayers with the offset proposal than the taxes collected on groceries now. This is just a sneaky way to get uneducated voters to vote themselves a future tax increase. How about no offset????  Aint goin happen. The state is after more tax dollars not less. You would have to be plain stupid to think you are getting some kind of tax break from this.

I got an idea. How about a lottery as the offset?

Well you don’t have to. The house already did.

Well, I for one will NOT be voting yes on this one.... I’m tired of working hard for my money only to give it to the lower and middle class people. No! Don’t say I won’t be giving it to the lower and middle class. It’s what they call welfare, food stamps, medicaid, ssi, etc. So Thank me again for supporting you!
