two-year college system from holding elected office are now
officially in place.
Chancellor Bradley Byrne has told college presidents that the
policies are effective immediately.
That means several system employees who are currently serving in
the Legislature will have to start using their leave time to go to
the Capitol or choose between the two jobs.
The U.S. Department of Justice cleared the policies late last
week and Byrne sent a memo Tuesday telling college presidents to
begin enforcing them.
A lawsuit filed by the Alabama Education Association challenging
the policies is still pending.
Byrne said the system does not have to wait until the lawsuit is
resolved before enforcing the new rules.
