NEW YORK (AP) - Taylor Hicks might have won "American Idol," but he doesn't have his record deal anymore. The Hoover soul singer who claimed the "Idol" title in 2006 has apparently been dropped by J Records.
The label is within Sony-BMG, which signs the show's singers.
J Records publicist Liz Morentin says Hicks is going to record his next album on his own but didn't give further details.
Season two "Idol" winner Ruben Studdard left his contract with J Records late last year.
The Birmingham native still has a contract with 19 Entertainment, which is the company managed by "Idol" creator Simon Fuller.
Morentin said Studdard is working on an upcoming album, but it will not be distributed by J Records.
Hicks' post-"Idol" album was released in December 2006 and debuted at Number 2 on the charts.
It sold a respectable 699,000 copies, but didn't reach the 1 million mark like all the other debuts from previous winners.
