MOBILE, Ala. (AP) - New Year's gunfire in Alabama wounded a
Prichard woman at a midnight prayer service and startled a
Huntsville woman with a bullet that pierced a roof and landed in
her lap. Montgomery police could not rule out celebratory shooting
in the slaying of a 7-year-old boy.
Police across the state routinely warn of random gunfire each
new year and attempt to stop it. But the unwelcome tradition still
mixes gunfire with fireworks.
7-year-old Curtis Jackson Junior was playing outside his
family's apartment in west Montgomery when he was shot in the head
around 7 p.m. Monday night. He died at Children's Hospital in
Birmingham. 25-year-old Darnell Addison surrendered on New Year's
Day and was charged with capital murder.
In south Alabama, a Prichard woman was attending a midnight
church service when a bullet tore through the roof of a church in
Prichard, striking her in the face. The woman, whose name with
withheld, is listed in stable condition today. Police said the
bullet apparently was fired from a nearby street.
Police in Mobile charged five people with firing guns to
celebrate 2008, but there was no indication they were involved in
the Prichard shooting.
In Huntsville, a police spokesman said a bullet pierced the roof
of a residence just after midnight Tuesday and landed in a woman's
lap. She was not injured.
Birmingham police did not have an immediate tally of any New
Year's gunfire. The Jefferson County Sheriff's Office had no
reported incidences of celebratory shootings.
