Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal has declared
a state emergency in advance of Gustav. It's a tropical storm now,
but could crash ashore on the Gulf Coast sometime over the Labor
Day weekend as a category three hurricane. It has already killed at
least 22 people in Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

PORT-AU-PRINCE, Haiti (AP) - Gustav has already killed 23 people
in Haiti and the Dominican Republic and now there's concern it
could gain strength again and hit the U.S. Gulf coast as a Category
3 hurricane by Labor Day.
Oil workers have started leaving their rigs in the Gulf of
Mexico, and New Orleans has drawn up evacuation plans.
By Wednesday evening, a slightly weakened Gustav had top winds
of 45 miles per hour. It was centered some 100 miles south of
Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, and was traveling west-northwest at eight
miles per hour.
A hurricane warning was in effect for parts of Cuba, including
the U.S. military base at Guantanamo.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (AP) - Companies are preparing to shut off
their pipelines on the ocean floor and possibly evacuate thousands
of offshore workers as Tropical Storm Gustav takes aim at the Gulf
of Mexico.
Gas prices fell again Tuesday, but the threat from Gustav raised
the possibility that gas could soon head upward.
Oil prices climbed for a third day as Tropical Storm Gustav spun
toward the Gulf on a possible collision course with offshore oil
and gas platforms.
It's still too soon to know where Gustav is headed. Some models
show it taking a path toward Louisiana and other Gulf states that
were hit by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita three years ago. Those two
storms sent fuel prices soaring.
There are more than 4,000 oil and gas installations in the Gulf.
In 2005, Hurricanes Katrina and Rita destroyed 109 oil platforms
and five drilling rigs.

I have found too that several gas stations are out of gas. If you need gas do so as soon as possible because they are saying it will be next week before they get anymore in!

Might want to go ahead and get gas tonight or tomorrow. One of my relatives went to 3 gas stations today that were sold out....

Guess we will all ride it out together until we start to lose power.
.
A day or so after Katrina I heard that the Wal Mart in Tillmans Corner was open.  Went there and people were already gathering in the parking lot waiting for the place to open.  Someone whispered that the one at Schillinger and Airport was already open and in full swing.  Cars took off out of the parking lot so fast it looked like the Talladega Speedway!
.
Man was that Wal Mart picked over!  I found a bag of baby carrots and a few cans of some strange flavored Vienna sausages.  After a couple of days my skin looked orange, my breath smelled like a smoked jalapeno and my bowels thought someone dropped the A-Bomb!!!! LOL

thankfully i have everything i need. i just do not think i could take walmart. people go crazy. i waited until the day before katrina hit last time and went. they still had plenty. i was told they have disaster trucks. the only thing bad was they forgot to bring in the buggies and they were like bullets in the parking lot.

Hi all-I went to Wal-mart this afternoon, and it was pretty packed for a Wednesday afternoon. EVERYONE was getting hurricane supplies-just in case-is what I kept hearing. The prescription line was also long. If at all possible, I would go now, rather than later. Bread was OK, but canned stuff starting to look skimpy. I don’t know about batteries, because I didn’t look-forgot what size I needed-must be my part-timers!

Anyway, would be a good idea to go ahead and go, because I have a feeling that by the weekend, everything will be gone.

We will stay. I have too many animals that I can’t take with me, and can’t leave behind. Not to mention, my husband will probably have off days canceled, and I would hate to leave with him stuck here. My house is on a hill (sort of) and there are no large trees directly in front of it. We lost a few shingles with Katrina, and some branches of trees in the field. My neighbor lost a barn and the roof off another barn. Be safe!

lol bamabob that was a good one.

Rita news kind of got pushed out of the headlines because of the New Orleans disaster.  In fact, most people didn’t even realize that the Mississippi gulf coast was leveled from Louisiana to Alabama, due to Katrina.  All they saw was the aftermath of the levee breaks in New Orleans.

If Gustav does come this way, will WKRG tie Jene’ Young to a light pole in the driving rain and make her tell us it is wet and windy outside?

~Shakes my head~ I wonder why no one talks about how much Rita affected? Lake Charles was evacuated for a MONTH.
