At an official ceremony this morning, a band played the Iraqi national anthem,
as the old flag was lowered and a new, but temporary, flag was raised at the
Prime Minister's office in Baghdad's Green Zone.
The Iraqi parliament has one year to agree on a permanent flag.
The flag design was a sticking point in the 2005 passage of Iraq's
constitution.
The new flag does not include symbols from the Saddam Hussein era.
It still has red, white and black horizontal stripes, but the writing on the
central white stripe was changed.
