For many families along the Gulf Coast, Katrina's second anniversary is a sad reminder of the storm that turned their lives upside down. But, for one Pass Christian family August 29th has new meaning.
For the first time in two years, the Swanier family walked through the doors of their brand new home--- built by dozens of volunteers from across the country.
"Being back at home in a home, you can actually live again and start a good thing out with your family," said Chris Swanier. His wife Tina says the family can now start putting Katrina behind them. "It's exciting," said Tina. "It's a new beginning and it's a fresh start."
Birmingham-based Cottage Living magazine and Mercy Housing, a local non-profit group, teamed up to help the Swaniers. The magazine's editors pitched in to design and decorate.
"The best moment for me was this morning when I came out here and I saw Aaron's sneakers on the porch," said Kate Karam, the senior Garden Editor at Cottage Living. Aaron is the Swanier's two year old son. "They're finally home after all these months of working," said Karam.
The four bedroom, two bathroom home is fully furnished. The house will be featured in the November issue of Cottage Living.
