EVERGREEN, Ala. (AP) - Conecuh County officials are set to signcontracts June 9 for an environmental study on a proposed
2,700-acre lake that could revive the economy for one of the
state's poorest counties.
County officials have some money set aside for the $800,000
environmental study, and they will seek more from state and federal
coffers for the actual project. They hope the proposed lake will
attract more local tourism, increase property values and generate
higher property tax revenue.
But some environmental groups have spoken out against the
project, saying it could negatively affect waterways south of the
proposed dam. Landowners near the creek have been outspoken about
their right to live on the property homesteaded by their ancestors.
