The dogs are very today awake and hankering for some attention. Everyday they are taken out to get some fresh air.“It's an all volunteer organization, everyone that comes over here does it out the kindness of their hearts, and it's a lot cleaning and a lot of animals to take care of,” says Mobile SPCA president Janine Woods.
She says the new shelter is a long time coming. The small purple house can hold up to 30 adult dogs. Puppies are a little easier, they just need a blanket, some wires on the floor and they're good to go. The adoption center allows them to offer dog adoptions five days a week rather than off site adoptions twice a month.
“The more animals that come out the shelter the more that are going to be spayed and neutered and the less that are going to go into the shelter, so my ultimate goal would be for us to really have to search for animals to put out here,” says Woods.
The dogs come from shelters across Mobile County. Woods says the cost of the medical care they receive often is greater than the adoption fee.
“[They] have been spayed and neutered up to date on their vaccinations, they are micro-chipped, they have been vet checked they are free of parasites they have everything done for them,” says Woods.
She says the average adoption fee is 100 dollars and there are plenty of options if you still need to pay or neuter your pet.
The Center has a grand opening Sunday, April 13th at 2 pm. Their regular hours are Tuesday through Saturday 10 am to 3 pm. The address is 620 Zeigler Circle West.

I think the goals of the shelter are to be commended, and it would be great to not have to bring animals in. I , like peachieblue , do have concerns that more isn’t being done for animals that are reported around town, but that animals from various shelters are being brought here. Why is that?
