certain he would die from burns suffered in a fiery car accident
but God gave him strength to recover.
The 73-year-old Vaughn, who was on a respirator for two weeks at
a Mobile hospital but is now back home in Dothan attending daily
physical therapy sessions, recalled the November 16th wreck on
Interstate 10.
He said he had just stopped his car due to an accident ahead
when he was struck from behind by another vehicle, with his car
erupting in flames.
Vaughn and two passengers were able to escape through a broken
window, but all three were injured and hospitalized.
Vaughn was elected state president of the National Association
for the Advancement of Colored People in October. He was released
December 18th. One passenger, Nettie Bryant, remains hospitalized
in Mobile, while the other, Janice Blackman, was released earlier.
Vaughn said he plans to continue being active in local civic
causes as well as state projects with the NAACP.
