Commission tells lawmakers that a sales tax holiday probably would
not produce a significant savings for shoppers.
Joe Blount also said Tuesday it would be difficult for his
agency to oversee the program.
Several states have days when certain items are exempt from
sales tax.
Some Mississippi lawmakers have been pushing for a weekend when
shoes and clothing under $100 would be exempt from the 7 percent
sales tax.
Blount told the House Ways and Means Committee that some stores
might be able to reprogram cash registers to temporarily remove the
sales tax on designated items. He said it's unlikely all stores
could do that.
